Frequently Asked Questions

What is a care chair?

A care chair is a specialist piece of seating designed to provide comfort, postural support, and assisted movement for people with reduced mobility. Unlike standard armchairs, care chairs are engineered to address specific clinical and personal needs. Using a care chair can help someone stand up safely, relieve pressure on vulnerable skin, or simply allow a person to sit comfortably for extended periods.
Care chairs come in several categories depending on the level of support required. Level 1 and 2 are most suited to those who need minimal to moderate support, while Level 3 and 4 chairs feature advanced functions such as powered tilt-in-space, back recline, adjustable leg rests, and pressure relieving upholstery. These higher-level specialist chairs for the elderly and disabled are often found in care homes and hospitals but are just as suitable for private homes.
Whether you need a riser recliner, a high seat chair, specialised chair or a bariatric version, the right care chair can make a transformative difference to daily life. The right support means improved independence, reducing the need for carer assistance, and protecting against pressure sores.
Not sure which care chair is right for you? Our friendly team will guide you through the options and arrange delivery at a time that suits you. Call us today on 0800 111 6234.

Who needs a specialist mobility chair or disability chair?

Specialist mobility chairs and disability chairs are suitable for a wide range of people. Anyone who struggles to sit down or stand up safely, spends extended periods in a chair, or someone who has a condition that affects their posture or comfort may benefit from one.
Common reasons people hire or purchase a specialist disability chair include:
Recovery from hip or knee replacement surgery
Arthritis or joint pain that makes rising from low seating difficult
Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, MS, or a stroke
Reduced muscle strength and balance associated with ageing
Conditions requiring pressure care, such as diabetes or vascular disease
Bariatric needs requiring wider and higher capacity seating
Extended periods of immobility requiring positional changes
Give us a call on 0800 111 6234 to discuss your requirements.

Can I rent a care chair or riser recliner chair?

Yes. Hiring a care chair or riser recliner is an excellent option when you need specialist seating for a defined period, for example, during recovery from surgery, while waiting for a permanent solution, or while trialling a chair before committing to a purchase.
We offer short-term and long-term rental on our full range of care chairs, including riser recliners, high-seat chairs, profiling chairs, tilt chairs, bariatric chairs, and mobility chairs for elderly users. Our hire chairs are delivered clean and in excellent condition, fully set up in your home by one of our engineers.
Renting rather than buying makes strong financial sense if your need is temporary, or if you are unsure which type of chair will suit you best. It also means you are not left with a large piece of furniture once the need has passed. Our chair hire is available on a flexible basis, simply call us to discuss the hire period that works for you.

How quickly can a rental chair for hip replacement recovery be delivered?

Following a hip replacement, you will typically be advised to use a raised or high-seat chair to avoid bending the hip beyond 90 degrees. Standard home furniture is usually far too low, which is why rental chairs for hip replacement patients are in high demand immediately after discharge from hospital.
We understand the urgency. We aim to deliver rental chairs for post-operative recovery as quickly as possible. We have many delivery options available including same and next day delivery. Our high-seat chairs and riser recliner chairs are particularly well suited to hip replacement recovery, as they allow you to sit and stand without placing damaging strain on the new joint.
We recommend arranging your chair hire before your surgery date, so everything is in place for when you return home. Our team is experienced in working to hospital discharge timescales and will liaise with you (or a family member) to ensure smooth delivery and setup.
Preparing for hip surgery? Call us now on 0800 111 6234 to reserve your rental chair ahead of your operation one less thing to worry about when you come home.

How long do I need a specialist chair after hip replacement surgery?

Following a total hip replacement, NHS guidelines advise that patients must follow hip precautions for at least six weeks after surgery. The most important of these is avoiding bending the hip beyond 90 degrees. This means your knees must always be lower than your hips when seated. Standard home sofas and armchairs are almost always too low to meet this requirement safely.
A raised or height-adjustable chair or a riser recliner keeps the hip at a safe angle, makes it easier to stand without twisting or leaning forward dangerously, and reduces the risk of dislocation during the recovery period. Most patients benefit from using a specialist chair for between six and twelve weeks post-surgery, though your surgeon or physiotherapist will advise on your individual timeline.
Because the need is temporary, hiring a chair for this period is far more practical and cost-effective than buying. We can arrange delivery before your operation date, so the chair is ready and waiting when you come home from hospital.
Ready to arrange your hire? Call us today on 0800 111 6234.

Yes, we can usually arrange riser recliner chair hire near you, with nationwide delivery across the UK on our full range of hire care chairs. Call us today on 0800 111 6234. We offer nationwide delivery and can have a chair with you far sooner than you might expect.

Can I get a lift chair or recliner chair on the NHS?

Yes, but only in limited circumstances, as NHS funding for riser recliner chairs and lift chairs is heavily restricted and varies considerably between local authorities and NHS Integrated Care Boards. The NHS will only fund a riser recliner chair where there is a clearly evidenced, long-term clinical need such as an inability to transfer safely from a standard chair and where no other solution can meet that need. Simply finding standard chairs uncomfortable, or needing a chair after routine surgery, is unlikely to meet the NHS funding threshold.
Even where NHS provision is approved, waiting times can be significant, and the chair supplied will typically be a standard clinical model with limited adjustability and no choice of size, colour, or additional features. You do not get to select the chair, it is prescribed by a clinician and provided on loan, meaning it remains NHS property.
Hiring a care chair privately gives you immediate access to the right chair, chosen to your specific needs, with full flexibility on hire duration. There are no referrals, no waiting lists, and no eligibility assessments. For most people recovering from surgery or dealing with a temporary increase in mobility needs, private hire is by far the faster, more flexible, and more comfortable solution.
Why wait for an NHS referral? Call us today on 0800 111 6234 for fast, flexible private hire of care chairs delivered straight to your door.

What is a riser recliner chair and how does it help elderly or disabled people?

A riser recliner chair sometimes called a lift chair, a stand-up chair for elderly people, a lift-up chair for disabled users, or simply a rise and recline chair uses an electric motor to perform two functions: it reclines the backrest and raises the footrest for comfortable resting, and it tilts the whole seat forward to assist the user to a standing position.
For elderly people and disabled adults who find it difficult or unsafe to stand from a conventional chair, a riser recliner can be life changing. The gentle lifting action reduces strain on the hips, knees, and lower back, promotes independence, and reduces the risk of falls. Riser recliner chairs are suitable for people with arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, post-surgical recovery, general frailty, and many other conditions.
We stock single-motor riser recliners (where the footrest and backrest move together) and dual-motor models (where footrest and backrest move independently for greater positional flexibility). We also offer bariatric riser recliner chairs with enhanced weight capacity, reclining chair beds that lay completely flat for sleeping, and profiling chairs with tilt-in-space functionality for complex needs.
Interested in hiring a riser recliner? Call us today on 0800 111 6234.

What is a profiling chair and who is it suitable for?

A profiling chair is a specialist care chair with multiple powered adjustment functions. Unlike a standard riser recliner, a profiling chair typically offers powered tilt-in-space (the whole seat tilts without changing the body’s posture angle), powered back recline, powered leg rest adjustment, and height adjustment. Many models also have wheels, allowing the user to be moved from room to room while remaining seated.
Profiling chairs are the highest level of specialist care chair, suited to people with complex seating needs. They are commonly used in hospitals and care homes but can be hired for use at home. Typical users include people with advanced neurological conditions, those requiring pressure area management, individuals who need to be repositioned regularly without transferring out of the chair, and those needing assistance with eating, personal care, or physiotherapy while seated.
Our profiling chairs come with adjustable seat widths, pressure-relieving upholstery options, retractable and swing-away armrests for transfers, and the ability to be used with a hoist for assisted moves.
Need a profiling chair or other specialist seating for complex care needs? Call us on 0800 111 6234 to discuss requirements and arrange a suitable chair on a short or long-term hire basis.

What is a tilt-in-space chair and why is it used for elderly people?

A tilt-in-space chair tilts the entire seating unit seat, back and leg rest together rather than reclining the backrest alone. This means the user’s body position and posture angle remain constant while the chair tips back, which is important for people who lack the trunk strength to maintain their posture when a conventional recline is applied.
Tilt-in-space is particularly valuable for elderly people with postural challenges, those at risk of sliding from their chair, people with neurological conditions, and anyone requiring pressure redistribution. By redistributing the user’s weight across the back and buttocks, tilt-in-space reduces pressure on vulnerable areas and helps prevent pressure sores during long periods of sitting.
Many of our hire care chairs include tilt-in-space as a standard feature.
To find out more about tilt-in-space chairs and our full range of specialist care chairs available for hire call us on 0800 111 6234.

Do you have high-seat chairs or high chairs for disabled adults?

Yes. High-seat chairs also called high chairs or high back chairs have a raised seat height that makes sitting down and standing up significantly easier. Standard sofas and armchairs sit at around 40 to 45 cm from the floor, which is too low for many elderly and disabled people to use safely. A high-seat chair typically sits at 50 to 55 cm or more, reducing the range of movement required to stand and sit.
Height-adjustable chairs are particularly recommended for people recovering from hip or knee replacement surgery, those with arthritic hips or knees, OAP chair users with limited strength, and anyone who finds standard chair heights uncomfortable or unsafe.
We hire a range of high-seat chairs, height-adjustable chairs, and riser recliner chairs that can be adjusted to suit the individual user’s requirements.
Call us today on 0800 111 6234 to find out which high-seat or height-adjustable chair is best for you, and to arrange fast delivery.

Do you hire sleeping chairs or reclining chairs for people who need to sleep upright?

Yes. Some of our hire care chairs can recline to a fully flat position, effectively functioning as a sleeping chair or chair bed. These are ideal for elderly people or disabled adults who cannot get in and out of a conventional bed safely, who have respiratory or cardiac conditions requiring an elevated sleeping position, or who spend extended periods resting in their chair.
Our reclining chair beds and medical recliner chairs offer adjustable positions from fully upright to fully flat, allowing the user to find their most comfortable resting angle. Bariatric versions with enhanced weight capacity are also available. All hire chairs are supplied with clean, healthcare-grade upholstery.
We also offer reclining armchairs for elderly users and hospital-style reclining chairs for home use that stop short of a full flat position but offer a range of comfortable resting angles.
To explore the chair bed options available, call our friendly team on 0800 111 6234.

Do you have bariatric chairs or chairs for larger, heavier users?

Yes. Our bariatric care chairs are specifically designed for wider or heavier users, with enhanced seat widths and weight capacities of up to 40 stone (approximately 254 kg). Standard mobility chairs and armchairs for disabled people are not built to accommodate larger users safely, and using undersized equipment can be both uncomfortable and hazardous.
Our bariatric range includes bariatric riser recliner chairs with tilt and recline functions, bariatric reclining chair beds for those who need to sleep in their chair, high-capacity high-seat chairs, and bariatric height-adjustable reclining chairs suitable for care home and home environments. All bariatric chairs provide robust lumbar and back care support with reinforced frames.
We understand that sourcing appropriate bariatric seating can be challenging. Our team will discuss your specific requirements and recommend the right chair quickly and discreetly.

What is the difference between a single-motor and dual-motor riser recliner chair?

Single-motor riser recliner chairs have one motor that controls both the backrest and the footrest simultaneously. When you press the control, the footrest rises as the back reclines both movements happen together in one fixed action. These chairs are simpler to operate and generally less expensive. They are well suited to users who mainly want the rise function and a reclining rest position.
Dual-motor riser recliner chairs have two independent motors, allowing the footrest and backrest to be adjusted separately. This means the user can, for example, raise the leg rest while keeping the back upright useful for leg elevation to reduce swelling or recline the back without raising the footrest. Dual-motor chairs are better suited to users with specific postural requirements, those with oedema or leg conditions, and anyone who needs fine-tuned positional control.
Both single and dual-motor models are available in our hire range, alongside bariatric options and models with additional features such as heat, massage, and powered headrests.

Is it better to hire or buy a care chair or riser recliner?

Whether you want to hire or buy depends largely on how long you need the chair and how certain you are about which type suits you best.
Buying a riser recliner or care chair outright typically costs between £500 and £2,500 or more, depending on the model, motor type, and upholstery. That is a significant investment and one that is difficult to reverse if the chair turns out not to be the right size, style, or level of support for the user. Buying also means you are left with a large, specialist piece of furniture once the need has passed, which can be difficult to rehome.
Hiring makes much stronger financial sense when the need is temporary for example, during recovery from hip or knee surgery, during a period of illness, or while caring for a relative who is staying with you. Hiring also lets you try different chairs without committing to a purchase, and our team will handle delivery, setup, and collection, meaning there is no hassle at either end.
For longer-term needs, many families start with a hire arrangement and then decide to purchase once they know exactly which chair works best. We are happy to discuss both options.

Will a care chair or riser recliner fit through my doorway?

This is one of the most practical questions to consider before hiring a care chair, and one that is easy to overlook until the day of delivery. Standard UK interior doorways are typically around 72 to 76 cm wide. Most care chairs and riser recliners are between 60 and 75 cm wide, but some larger models particularly bariatric chairs may be wider.
When you enquire, we will provide the exact dimensions of the chair you are considering and advise you to measure your doorways before confirming the booking. It is the hirer’s responsibility to confirm that access is suitable, so please check all doorways between the front door and the intended room, not just the room itself.
If you are concerned about access, speak to us before booking and we will suggest the most appropriate chair from our range that will fit your home comfortably. Some of our chairs have removable backs or swing-away armrests that make them easier to manoeuvre through tighter spaces.
Before you book, measure your doorways and give us a call on 0800 111 6234 and we will confirm which chairs from our range will work for your home.

How do I safely help someone in and out of a riser recliner chair?

One of the main benefits of a riser recliner is that it significantly reduces the amount of physical assistance required to help someone stand up or sit down. However, it is still important to use the chair correctly to avoid injury to both the user and any carer:
To sit down: Use the handset to bring the chair to the fully raised (tilted forward) position. The user backs up until they feel the chair behind them, then lowers themselves down with control. The chair does the work of bridging the gap.
To stand up: Press the rise button to tilt the chair forward gently. The user should wait until the chair has reached its maximum rise position before standing, to minimise the distance they need to push up. Always ensure the footrest is fully down before attempting to stand.
Carer assistance: If assistance is needed, stand to the side of the user, never in front, and support under the arm rather than pulling on the wrist or hand. Avoid rushing the process.
Wheels: If the chair has castors, ensure they are locked when the user is getting in or out of the chair.
Our team will demonstrate the correct use of the chair upon delivery and can also provide guidance on safe assisted transfers. To order, call us on 0800 111 6234.
